Stage 2 Furniture Construction (Material Products)

About this Subject

  • Length of Study: Full Year
  • Number of SACE Credits: 20
  • Pre-Requisite Information: Desirable Knowledge: At least a C grade in Stage 1 Furniture Construction

Subject Overview

This subject seeks to build understanding in the world of design and function while developing skills and techniques involving timber as the central material. Students will further their knowledge and appreciation of societal and environmental issues and industrial practices surrounding this technology. They will advance their design technique by producing freehand, annotated preliminary sketches, rendered perspective drawings and CAD drawings to Australian Standards and 3D printed models of proposed ideas.

By participating in early skill development tasks, students further develop their machining skills with the circular saw, thicknesser, planer joiner, bandsaw, router, various power and hand tools. These Skills and Application Tasks prepare students for more difficult tasks, resulting in them developing a substantial folio depicting their major furniture piece. This work sees the student keep a Product Record of their progress and contains a study of some aspect of the materials they are using, requiring testing and documentation.

Students undertake study in Stage 2 Materials Products through the following topics:

  • Design briefs emphasising the importance of the design process
  • Testing and understanding material physical properties and characteristics
  • Demonstrating knowledge and skills through working with a range of Tools, Machines and Systems to convert resistive materials into useful products
  • Critical analysis of products, processes and production techniques

Subject Fee

Please note: Students may incur an additional resource fee for this subject, dependent on the materials they choose to work with.
