Subject Overview

In Stage 2 Japanese (Beginners), students develop their Japanese language skills for a range of purposes and extend their understanding of Japanese life and culture. Students have opportunities to interact with others and create texts in Japanese to share information, ideas, opinions, feelings and experiences. Students also analyse texts to interpret meaning; examine relationships between language, culture and identity; and reflect on the ways in which culture influences communication. Assessment tasks are varied to allow students to adapt to different styles, and the criteria for assessment are ideas, expression, interpretation and reflection.

Students undertake study in Stage 2 Japanese (Beginners) through the following prescribed themes:

• Relationships, Lifestyles, and Experiences
• The Personal World
• The Japanese-Speaking Communities

Assessment

Stage 2 assessment is comprised of 70% school-based assessment which is externally moderated by the SACE Board and 30% external assessment which is externally marked by the SACE Board. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:

70% School Based Assessment:

Assessment Type 1: Interaction (30%)

• Interacting in spoken Japanese
• Presentation and Discussion

Assessment Type 2: Text Production (20%)

• Writing or Multi-modal in Japanese
• Responding to Written Texts in Japanese

Assessment Type 3: Text Analysis (20%)

• Analysing and Interpreting Spoken Texts
• Analysing and Interpreting Written Texts

30% External Assessment:

• 10 Minute Oral Examination (Zoom)
• 130 Minute Online Examination (e-Exam)
