About this Subject
- Length of Study: Full Year
- Number of SACE Credits: 20
- Pre-Requisite Information: Essential Knowledge: At least a C grade in Stage 1 Chemistry
Subject Overview
Students develop and extend their understanding of how the physical world is chemically constructed, the interaction between human activities and the environment, and the use that human beings make of the planet’s resources. They explore examples of how scientific understanding is dynamic and develops with new evidence, which may involve the application of new technologies. The study of Chemistry helps students to make informed decisions about interacting with and modifying nature, and explore options such as green or sustainable chemistry, which seeks to reduce the environmental impact of chemical products and processes.
Students undertake study in Stage 2 Chemistry through the following topics:
- Monitoring the Environment
- Managing Chemical Processes
- Organic and Biological Chemistry
- Managing Resources
Assessment
Stage 2 assessment is comprised of 70% school-based assessment which is externally moderated by the SACE Board and 30% external assessment which is externally marked by the SACE Board. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:
70% School Based Assessment:
Assessment Type 1: Folio (30%)
- Deconstruct/Design Investigation
- Science as a Human Endeavour
Assessment Type 2: Skills and Applications Tasks (40%)
- Test on Monitoring the Environment
- Test on Managing Chemical Processes
- Test on Managing Resources
- Test on Organic and Biological Chemistry
30% External Assessment:
- 2 Hour External Examination
