Stage 1 General Mathematics A

  • Pre-Requisite Information: Desirable Knowledge: At least a C grade in Year 10 Mathematics

Subject Overview

General Mathematics has a problem based approach that focusses on the development of mathematical models to solve problems. The course builds on previously learnt skills such as algebraic manipulation, problem solving and spatial reasoning skills. In addition students are introduced to skills using the graphics calculator. Within topics exist opportunities to connect students’ learning to real world contexts.

Students undertake study in Stage 1 General Mathematics A through the following topics:

  • Applications of Trigonometry
  • Statistics
  • Matrices
  • Measurement

Assessment

Stage 1 assessment is comprised of 100% school-based assessment. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:

  • Assessment Type 1: Skills and Applications Tasks (75%)
  • Assessment Type 2: Folio Tasks (25%)

Examination:

  • This subject has a 130 minute examination at the end of the semester.
