Subject Overview
In Stage 2 English, students analyse the interrelationship of author, text and audience with an emphasis on how language and stylistic features shape ideas and perspectives. They consider social, cultural, economic, historical or political perspectives in texts. Students explore how the purpose of a text is achieved through application of text conventions and stylistic choices to position the audience to respond to ideas and perspectives. An understanding of purpose, audience and context is applied in students’ own creation of imaginative, interpretive, analytical and persuasive texts. Students have opportunities to reflect on their personal values and those of others.
Students undertake study in Stage 2 English through the following topics:

- Comparative Analysis
Assessment
Stage 2 assessment is comprised of 70% school-based assessment which is externally moderated by the SACE Board and 30% external assessment which is externally marked by the SACE Board. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:
70% School Based Assessment:
Assessment Type 1: Responding to Texts (30%)
- Response to a Selection of Poetry/Mass Media
- Response to a Film
- Response to a Play or Novel
Assessment Type 2: Creating Texts (40%)
- Expository Multimodal
- Creative Writing
- Audience Identification Writing
- Writer’s Statement
30% External Assessment:
- The externally assessed component is a Comparative Analysis of two independently chosen texts.
