Subject Overview

In Stage 2 Essential English students respond to and create texts in and for a range of personal, social, cultural, community and/or workplace contexts. Students understand and interpret information, ideas and perspectives in texts and consider ways in which language choices are used to create meaning.

Students undertake study in Stage 2 Essential English through the following topics:

  • First Nations Voices Study
  • Film Study
  • Creative Travel Writing
  • Advocacy Texts
  • Ceremonial Speeches
  • Language Study

Assessment

Stage 2 assessment is comprised of 70% school-based assessment which is externally moderated by the SACE Board and 30% external assessment which is externally marked by the SACE Board. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:

70% School Based Assessment:

Assessment Type 1: Responding to Texts (30%)

  • Response to Australian Music (Written, Oral or Multimodal)
  • Response to a Film (Written, Oral or Multimodal)
  • Assessment Type 2: Creating Texts (40%)
  • Advocacy Text (Written)
  • Speech for a Specified Purpose (Oral)
  • Travel Promotion (Written, Oral or Multimodal)

30% External Assessment:

  • The externally assessed component is a Language Study.
