Subject Overview

The study of Outdoor Education provides students with opportunities to experience personal growth; to develop social skills, self-confidence, initiative, self-reliance, leadership and collaborative skills. They reflect on and evaluate their own learning progression through participation in Rock Climbing, Bushwalking and Kayaking expeditions. They implement improvement strategies to develop their outdoor skills. They use reflective practice to evaluate their collaboration, leadership skills and relationship with, and connection to, nature.

Stage 2 Outdoor Education consists of three interrelated focus areas including conservation and sustainability, human connections with nature and personal growth, safety and development. Together, the learning through these three focus areas enable students to develop and extend the core skills, knowledge and understanding required to be safe, active, and informed participants in the natural environment. These focus areas are developed through involvement in activities and key practical skills such as leadership, navigation, group dynamics and outdoor activity techniques.

Students undertake study in Stage 2 Outdoor Education through involvement in activities and journeys in natural environments:

  • Rock Climbing
  • Bushwalking
  • Kayaking or Canoeing

Subject Fee

Please note: This subject incurs a resource fee of $1,000.

Assessment

Stage 2 assessment is comprised of 70% school-based assessment which is externally moderated by the SACE Board and 30% external assessment which is externally marked by the SACE Board. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:

70% School Based Assessment:

Assessment Type 1: About Natural Environments (20%)

  • Port River Day Trip

Assessment Type 2: Experiences in Natural Environments (50%)

  • Rock Climbing Camp

  • Kayaking Camp

  • Bushwalking Camp

30% External Assessment:

  • Connections with Natural Environments, Outdoor Experiences
  • Task based on the three camps students have undertaken
