Subject Overview
Essential Mathematics offers students the opportunity to extend their skills in ways that apply to practical problem solving in everyday and workplace contexts. Students apply their Mathematics to diverse settings, including everyday calculations, financial management, business applications, measurement and geometry, and statistics in social contexts. In Essential Mathematics, there is an emphasis on developing students’ computational skills and expanding their ability to apply their Mathematical skills in flexible and resourceful ways.
Students undertake study in Stage 2 Essential Mathematics through the following topics:
- Topic 1: Scales, Plans and Models
- Topic 2: Measurement
- Topic 3: Business Applications
- Topic 4: Statistics
- Topic 5: Investments and Loans
Assessment
Stage 2 assessment is comprised of 70% school-based assessment which is externally moderated by the SACE Board and 30% external assessment which is externally marked by the SACE Board. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:
70% School Based Assessment:
Assessment Type 1: Skills and Applications Tasks (30%)
- Topic tests on each of the units
Assessment Type 2: Mathematical Investigations (40%)
- Investigations on Topics 1, 2 and 5
30% External Assessment:
- 130 Minute External Examination on Topics 2, 4 and 5
