Subject Overview
General Mathematics extends students’ mathematical skills in ways that apply to practical problem solving. Topics cover a diverse range of applications of mathematics including personal financial management, the statistical investigation process, modelling using linear functions, matrices and discrete models.
Students undertake study in Stage 2 General Mathematics through the following topics:
- Topic 1: Modelling with Linear Relationships
- Topic 2: Modelling with Matrices
- Topic 3: Statistical Models
- Topic 4: Financial Models
- Topic 5: Discrete Models
Assessment
Stage 2 assessment is comprised of 70% school-based assessment which is externally moderated by the SACE Board and 30% external assessment which is externally marked by the SACE Board. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:
70% School Based Assessment:
Assessment Type 1: Skills and Applications Tasks (40%)
- Topic tests on Topics 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
Assessment Type 2: Mathematical Investigation (30%)
- 1 Investigation on Topic 5
30% External Assessment:
- 130 Minute External Examination on Topics 3, 4 and 5
