A Step Towards Adulthood with 'The Departure' Ceremony
28 Mar 2025

Early in Term 1, our Year 9 students, together with their parents and teachers, gathered for The Departure – a powerful and symbolic beginning to their yearlong journey as part of The Rite Journey program. More than a ceremony, this moment marked a significant milestone in each student’s path toward adulthood.

Held at a local playground, the setting was chosen with great intention. A place of play, imagination and innocence, the playground served as a fitting backdrop for students to pause and honour their childhood. Here, families shared heartfelt conversations, stories and memories, taking time to reflect on the journey so far and the growth already seen. As the sun set, parents offered words of blessing and encouragement, giving their children permission to step forward into the next season of life with courage and curiosity.

From that point, students embarked on a long, challenging walk back to school - together with their peers and teachers - while parents remained behind. This symbolic separation marked the beginning of a new stage of independence, responsibility and discovery. Though the walk was physically demanding, the emotional weight of the evening was even more profound.

There were tears, laughter and quiet moments of understanding and reflection - but above all, a deep sense of connection. The atmosphere was one of love and shared purpose; a beautiful reminder of the power of community in raising and shaping young people.

At King’s, we are grateful to walk this journey with our students and families. The Rite Journey is a cornerstone of our Middle School experience, guiding students through one of the most important transitions in life. Through carefully designed experiences, the program invites students to reflect deeply, grow in self-awareness, and engage meaningfully with others. With themes of consciousness, connection, communication, challenge and celebration, it encourages students to look both inward and outward, building resilience and purpose along the way.

It is a privilege to witness our students step forward with strength and intention - supported by a community that believes in them and is committed to walking alongside them every step of the way.
