Stage 1 Science

About this Learning Area

Learning Area Leader: Stephen Irvine

Science offers students the chance to explore key scientific concepts and processes, understand how scientific knowledge is developed, and recognise its role in shaping culture, society and daily life. It builds a foundation in scientific inquiry methods, encourages clear communication of scientific ideas and supports problem-solving and evidence-based decision making. The curriculum helps students grow in knowledge and skills so they can make informed decisions about local, national and global challenges, and explore pathways into science-related careers.

To best prepare for Stage 2 Biology or Psychology, students are encouraged to complete two semesters of Science at Stage 1. While it is possible to study Stage 2 Biology or Psychology without this foundation, it would need to be discussed with the Learning Area Leader and is not generally recommended.
