Stage 1 Languages

About this Learning Area

Learning Area Leader: Keryn Allan

At King’s Baptist Grammar School, students can study either German or Japanese. To continue with a language at Stage 1, students must have achieved a C grade or higher in Year 10.

Continuers Level courses are designed for students who have studied the language for approximately 400 to 500 hours by the end of Stage 2, or have equivalent experience. Beginners Level courses are intended for students who have not studied the language beyond the equivalent of Year 8 and have not done so in the previous two calendar years. These courses are designed to be completed over two consecutive years (Stage 1 and Stage 2), with students typically reaching 200 to 240 hours of study by the end of Stage 2. As a result, students develop language skills and intercultural understanding at an intensive rate.

Through language learning, students gain communication skills, explore the role of culture in communication, and broaden their perspectives on social, cultural and career opportunities in an increasingly connected world.

Two exchange programs are offered. Each year, Year 10 German students may apply for the SA German Bavarian Exchange, an eight-week experience during Year 11. For Japanese students, King's maintains a sister school in Sonobe and a friendship school in Himeji. Exchange trips to Japan are usually offered every two years for Year 10 and 11 students, lasting approximately three weeks.
