Stage 2 Child Studies

Subject Overview

Child Studies focuses on children and their development from conception to 8 years. Students have the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of young children through individual, collaborative, and practical learning. They explore concepts such as the development, needs, and rights of children, the value of play, concepts of childhood and families, and the roles of parents and care-givers. They also consider the importance of behaviour management, child nutrition, and the health and well-being of children.

Students undertake study in Stage 2 Child Studies through the following topics:

  • Children’s Science Experiment
  • Children’s Play
  • Cookbook
  • Cultural Diversity
  • Impact of Technology on Children
  • Investigation of their Own Choice

Assessment

Stage 2 assessment is comprised of 70% school-based assessment which is externally moderated by the SACE Board and 30% external assessment which is externally marked by the SACE Board. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:

70% School-Based Assessment:

Assessment Type 1: Practical Activity (50%)

  • Children’s Science Experiment
  • Children’s Play
  • Impact of Technology on Children

Assessment Type 2: Group Activity (20%)

  • Cookbook
  • Cultural Diversity

30% External Assessment:

  • Investigation
