Stage 2 Music Explorations

Subject Overview

In Music Explorations, students develop and apply knowledge and understanding of musical elements in exploring and experimenting with music, musical styles, techniques and/or production. They apply musical literacy skills, analyse and discuss musical works and synthesise findings from their exploration of and experimentation with music. Students also express musical ideas and reflect on and critique their own learning within music.

Students undertake study in Stage 2 Music Explorations through the following topics:

  • Composing/Songwriting/Improvisation/Arranging/Performance
  • Live Performance Review
  • Critical Analysis and Discussion of Musical Styles

Assessment

Stage 2 assessment is comprised of 70% school-based assessment which is externally moderated by the SACE Board and 30% external assessment which is externally marked by the SACE Board. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:

70% School-Based Assessment:

Assessment Type 1: Musical Literacy (30%)

  • Composition/Songwriting Task
  • Analysis Task
  • Review of Works Presented in a Live Performance

Assessment Type 2: Explorations (40%)

  • A presentation of a set of short performances, compositions, arrangements and/or other musical products (for example, digital uploads, DJ set recording, the features of an original, handcrafted musical instrument)
  • A commentary on the processes of exploration and experimentation that they have used, and their key findings

30% External Assessment:

Creative Connections (30%)

  • Creative work (performance, composition, or arrangement) connected to the Assessment Type 2 focus area, and a discussion of that work
